Tree Removal and Felling in Hull
Rated 5.0 on Google from 23 reviews. Read our Google reviews
As local tree surgeons, Hull Tree Care takes down dead, dangerous and unwanted trees across Hull and East Yorkshire. Depending on the space, we either fell a tree in one piece or dismantle it in sections, so tight gardens are included. Quotes are free.
When a tree needs to come down
A tree usually needs removing when it's dead, unsafe, or simply too big for where it's growing. Common reasons include:
- The tree is dead, dying or badly damaged
- It's leaning, split or has been hit by a storm
- It's too close to the house, a garage or a boundary
- It blocks most of the light to your house or garden
- You want the space back for something else
If the tree is healthy and the problem is its size or the light, a crown reduction may be enough. For trees damaged in a storm, keep clear and call us first.
Felling or dismantling: how we take a tree down
There are two ways to take a tree down. Which one we use depends on how much clear space there is around it.
Straight felling
Straight felling means cutting the tree at the base and bringing it down in one go. It only works where there's a clear, safe area for the whole tree to land.
Sectional dismantling
Sectional dismantling means taking the tree down piece by piece, working from the top. Each section is cut and lowered in a controlled way. It takes longer, but it's how a tree comes down safely beside a house, over a fence or in a small garden.
Tight gardens and near buildings
Plenty of garden trees, including large mature trees, sit close to something that mustn't get hit: a house, a garage, a greenhouse, a fence or a neighbour's garden. That's where sectional dismantling comes in.
Before any cutting starts, we look at what's around the tree and plan how each part will come down. If access is awkward, tell us when you get in touch.
Stumps
Taking a tree down leaves a stump. If you want that gone too, we offer stump grinding below ground level; depth, remaining roots, grindings and intended reuse assessed for each job. If you'd like to have the stump ground out, ask about it when you get your quote.
Do you need permission first?
Sometimes. If a tree has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or stands in a conservation area, you usually need to contact the council (your local planning authority) before any work starts.
Protected tree (TPO)
You normally need the council's consent before it's felled or pruned.
Conservation area
You normally need to give the council six weeks' notice before work.
Check with Hull City Council or East Riding of Yorkshire Council, depending on where you live. If you're not sure whether any of this applies to your tree, mention it when you ask for a quote. This is general information, not legal advice.
Checking for wildlife
Before we start, we check the tree for nesting birds and signs of bats. Nests in use and bats are protected by law, so if we find them, we plan the work around them. That can mean changing what we do or holding off until a later date.

Questions
Anything else, just ask when you call.
Can you take down a tree in a small garden?
Yes. Where there isn't room to fell a tree in one piece, Hull Tree Care dismantles it in sections, lowering each part in a controlled way.
What's the difference between felling and dismantling?
Felling brings the whole tree down in one go and needs plenty of clear space. Dismantling takes it down in sections from the top, which is safer near buildings and boundaries.
Can you remove the stump as well?
Yes. We grind stumps out below ground level, and assess the depth, remaining roots, grindings and what you plan to do with the spot for each job.
Do I need permission to cut down a tree?
Only if it's protected by a Tree Preservation Order or stands in a conservation area. Check with Hull City Council or East Riding of Yorkshire Council before work starts.
Is the quote free?
Yes. Every tree removal quote from Hull Tree Care is free, with no obligation to go ahead.
