Why remove a stump
A stump left in the ground gets in the way long after the tree has gone, whether it's fresh after a tree has been felled or years old. People usually want one out because:
- It's a trip hazard, or it's in the way of the mower
- It takes up space you want to use
- It's sending up new shoots, which some trees do from the stump
- It's an eyesore in an otherwise finished garden
Stumps are also left behind by storm-damaged trees once they've been made safe and taken down.
How stump grinding works
A stump grinder is a machine with a cutting wheel that chips the stump away a layer at a time, down below ground level. It removes the stump without digging up the area around it. A typical job runs like this:
-
1
We look at the stump and what's around it. For safety, we check for walls, paths, fences and anything buried nearby that you know about, such as pipes or cables.
-
2
We ask what you plan to do with the spot afterwards, because that affects how deep we go.
-
3
We agree the depth for your job.
-
4
We grind the stump out below ground level.
-
5
We talk you through what's left, including any remaining roots and the grindings.
Assessed for each job
No two stumps are the same, so we don't use one depth for everything. For each job we assess four things:
Depth
How far below ground level the grinding needs to go.
Remaining roots
Grinding takes out the stump and the top of the main roots. Wider roots stay in the ground and break down over time.
Grindings
Grinding turns the stump into a mix of wood chip and soil. How much there is depends on the size of the stump.
Intended reuse
What you want to do with the spot.
If you have plans for the area, tell us before we start so we can assess the job with them in mind.
Grinding vs digging out: the difference
The difference between stump grinding and digging a stump out is how much comes out of the ground. Grinding removes the stump below ground level and leaves the wider roots in place. Digging out lifts the stump and its main root plate as well.
| Stump grinding | Digging a stump out | |
|---|---|---|
| What comes out | The stump, ground away below ground level | The stump and its main root plate |
| Wider roots | Stay in the ground and break down over time | Mostly lifted with the root plate |
| Disturbance to the garden | Kept to the spot where the stump was | A much bigger hole and more ground turned over |
| How often it's needed | The usual way to deal with a garden stump | Rarely needed |
Grinding is the usual choice because it gets rid of the stump without turning the surrounding garden over. If you think you need a stump fully dug out, tell us when you ask for a quote and we'll talk it through.
What's left after grinding?
Below ground level where the stump was, you're left with the grindings, a mix of wood chip and soil, and the wider roots, which stay in the ground and break down over time. Stump grinding below ground level; depth, remaining roots, grindings and intended reuse assessed for each job.
That's why we ask what you plan to do with the spot before we start. We'll talk you through what's left on your job once the grinding is done.

Questions
Anything else, just ask when you call.
Is stump grinding the same as tree stump removal?
It's the most common way of doing it. Most tree stump removal is done by grinding, because it takes the stump out below ground level without digging up the garden around it.
Can you grind out an old stump?
Yes. Hull Tree Care grinds out stumps from trees taken down years ago, as well as fresh ones.
How deep do you grind?
It depends on the job. We assess the depth for each stump, based on its size, what's around it and what you plan to do with the spot.
Will all the roots be removed?
No. Grinding takes out the stump and the top of the main roots. Wider roots stay in the ground and break down over time.
Can you grind the stump when you take the tree down?
Yes. Ask when you get your tree removal quote, and we'll include the stump if you'd like it gone.
Is the quote free?
Yes. Every stump grinding quote from Hull Tree Care is free, with no obligation to go ahead.
