Tree pruning is the part of tree surgery most gardens need. As local tree surgeons, Hull Tree Care prunes trees across Hull and East Yorkshire, from crown reductions and thinning to cutting out dead wood. Done properly, pruning keeps a tree healthy, balanced and off your roofline without taking it down. Quotes are free.

What pruning can fix

Most pruning jobs come down to light, space or safety. We're often asked to deal with:

  • Branches over the roof, gutters or a conservatory
  • Branches hanging over a path, drive or a neighbour's garden
  • A garden or house that's lost too much light
  • Dead or broken branches that could fall
  • A tree that's grown lopsided or out of balance

If it's hedges that have got out of hand rather than trees, we deal with those too.

Crown reduction

Crown reduction makes the whole canopy smaller. Branches are cut back to suitable points so the tree keeps a natural shape, just smaller.

It also slows the tree's spread for a few years while new growth fills back in. It's usually the answer when a healthy tree has got too big for its spot, is reaching the house, or is casting too much shade. A good reduction should still look like a tree afterwards, not a row of stumps.

Crown thinning

Crown thinning takes out a proportion of the smaller branches from inside the canopy, without changing the tree's overall height or spread.

It lets more light through to the garden below and lets wind pass through the tree more easily. It suits trees that are a fine size but have become dense and dark.

Deadwooding

Deadwooding means cutting out dead, dying and broken branches. Dead wood can drop without warning, especially in strong wind.

It's worth doing on any tree that hangs over a path, drive, garden, roof or play area. It's often combined with a reduction or thinning in the same visit.

Pruning or removal?

If the tree is healthy and the problem is its size, the light or a few branches, pruning is usually the better choice. If it's dead, unstable or in completely the wrong place, taking it down may make more sense.

We'll give you a straight view when we quote, including when taking the tree down is safer.

Some trees need the council's say-so before they're pruned, as well as before they're felled. If your tree might have a Tree Preservation Order or stands in a conservation area, check whether you need permission before work starts.

Checking for wildlife

We look over every tree for nesting birds and signs of bats before we start pruning. Both are protected by law. If we find an active nest or signs of bats, we adjust the work or put it back to a later date.

Questions

Anything else, just ask when you call.

What's the difference between crown reduction and crown thinning?

Crown reduction makes the whole tree smaller. Crown thinning keeps it the same size but removes some inner branches so more light and wind get through.

Will pruning harm my tree?

Careful pruning shouldn't. Damage comes from cutting too much or in the wrong places, such as lopping the top off a tree. Hull Tree Care cuts to suitable points and only takes what the job needs.

Can you stop branches touching my roof?

Yes. A crown reduction or selective pruning can take branches back from the roof, gutters and walls while keeping the tree.

When is the best time to prune a tree?

For most trees, late autumn to late winter is a good time, while the tree is dormant and the leaves are off, so it's easier to see the shape. There are exceptions. Birch and maple bleed sap if they're cut in late winter or spring, so they're better pruned in summer or early autumn. Cherry and plum trees are usually pruned in summer, which lowers the risk of disease getting into the cuts. Whatever the time of year, we check for nesting birds and bats before we start.

Is pruning cheaper than removal?

Not always. It depends on the tree and the work involved. We'll quote for what the tree actually needs, free.

Do you give free quotes?

Yes. Every pruning quote from Hull Tree Care is free, with no obligation to go ahead.
